Awesome training no matter what the venue is – what might that look like?

Coming from an agility background and having spent a lot of time thinking, discussing and establishing training structures and foundation skills for agility while writing the book Agility Right From the Start, these two trainers set off on a path looking for what is principle of method. Being passionate about developing great training sessions within a positive reinforcement paradigm, Emelie and Eva have distilled their five favorite ideas on what will get you those Great Training Sessions!

Are you curious about what “Good Agility Practices” look like when applied to obedience training? Can you see the similarities between heelwork and weave-pole exercises? And, what’s up with those spontaneous starts and the focus on offered behavior, anyway?

In this webinar, Emelie and Eva will connect the dots for you, condensing their principles and procedures into “five favorites”—five concepts that will bring your training to new heights. Everyone committed to reward-based training will enjoy learning from this Swedish duo. Petra Ford - Mark & Go Straight for Directed Jumping

Date: Thursday, May 20, 2021
Time: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 - Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time.

A go out seems pretty straight forward. Look straight ahead and run there until I tell you to sit. But dogs don’t inherently understand to “run straight.” And even though the center of the ring is obvious to humans, the picture is completely different every time. Especially from a dog’s perspective. Which makes it challenging for them to “mark.” In this webinar I will introduce you to the method I use to teach my dogs to “mark” and “go straight.” I do not use a stanchion or post as a marker. I have found that when my dogs can’t “see” the marker they are confused and anxious. This method teaches the dog to trust you. It teaches you a communication system to help your dog find the “center.” This results in a dog that is confident, finds and holds “mark” and runs straight regardless of the picture.

Sue Yanoff - Management of Chronic Pain

Date: Thursday, May 27, 2021
Time: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 - Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time.

Many performance dogs, as they get older, develop conditions that cause pain. Pain that persists for more than weeks to months is called “chronic pain.” Two of the most common causes of chronic pain in dogs are degenerative joint disease (arthritis) and back pain.

How do you know if your dog is in pain? What causes pain?

In the lecture on Management of Chronic Pain in my Sports Medicine class, I listed over 30 different ways we can treat chronic pain in our dogs. In this seminar, we will discuss some of these, including old standards and new options. No dog should have to live with pain. Find out what your options are for making your dog more comfortable.

Jennifer Henion - Breaking Tradition: Positive Strategies for Retriever Field Work

Click to view guest presenter biography information

Date: Thursday, May 27, 2021
Time: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 - Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time.

Retriever field work is a sport with a long tradition rooted in real work. Which was to gather food for the table or earn money for the handler. These were working dogs with a job.

The traditional training methods originated in that mindset. Our retriever sports evolved from that work, dragging the old attitudes of work along with it.

Thankfully, pioneers of modern dog sports like Agility, Freestyle and Trick Training (sports rooted in fun and science) have proven that all of the same challenges we face in Retriever sports, can be won with positive reinforcement methods and strategies.

In this webinar, we will talk about four major challenges of retriever training that were previously thought to require the old mindset. And we'll shine a light on the positive strategies that really work for each of the four.

They include 1) Steadiness despite instinctual drive 2) Accurate responses at long distances 3) Fetch reliability 4) Teaching straight lines

Sharon Carroll - Working with Dogs that Lack Enthusiasm

Date: Thursday, June 3, 2021
Time: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 - Registration required PRIOR to scheduled presentation time.

Some dogs just don’t appear to be enthusiastic about training. This may present as a lack of enthusiasm for all training related activities, or it may be specific to a certain sport or individual task (e.g. dumbbell retrieve). In some cases, the dog may even appear to lose interest in training after a period of what appeared to be enthusiastic, engaged work.

The observable behaviors may include:

  • Responding slowly to cues, needing repeated cues, or stopping responding altogether.
  • Leaving you or the training area during a session.
  • Avoiding eye contact with you or the task.
  • Engaging in displacement behaviors such as sniffing the ground during an active training session.
  • Developing a reluctance to join you at the start of a training session.

In this webinar we discuss common reasons why these behaviors may occur, including:

  • Feeling fearful, anxious, frustrated, or conflicted.
  • Physical limitations.
  • Low levels of mental stamina.
  • Sensitivity to making mistakes.
  • Sensitivity to changes in the environment.
  • Impact of prior learning history.

Most importantly, we also discuss simple strategies to put the enthusiasm back into the training process, for both the dog and the human!
